What happened
President Donald Trump held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Turnberry, Scotland, on July 28, 2025, with an extended press question period, carried on the White House channel. Prime Minister Starmer welcomed the President to Scotland at the opening of the session.
On farm policy, the President said: “we ended the estate tax. There is no estate tax on farmers,” explaining that when a parent leaves a farm to their children “they don’t have to worry about their local, possibly unfriendly banker coming in and stealing their farm,” and recounting that farmers had borrowed to pay the tax and, in his words, some “would end up committing suicide” — “We have totally ended the estate tax in those situations,” he said. Asked about migrants being housed in hotels in Britain and community safety, the President answered: “I don’t like anything about it. They shouldn’t be allowed in. Anybody illegally should not be allowed in the country.”
Why it matters
The Turnberry bilateral is the working center of the Scotland visit: the alliance meeting itself, plus the President putting two domestic signature claims — the farm estate-tax repeal and his illegal-entry position — on the record in front of the British Prime Minister and the press.
Scoreboard watch
This meeting is a scoreboard reference point: the President’s July 28, 2025 statement that the estate tax on family farms has been ended, as stated by the President, to be checked against the enacted tax law.
