What happened
President Donald Trump met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Turnberry, Scotland, on July 27, 2025, in a session opening their trade talks, carried on the White House channel. “It’s a great honor to have the president of the European Union with us,” the President said. “We’ve had a very good relationship over the years, but it’s been a very one-sided transaction, very unfair to the United States. And I think both sides want to see fairness.”
Von der Leyen framed the stakes: the United States and the European Union are “the two largest economies worldwide,” with “the biggest trade volume globally with $1.7 trillion dollar among us” and a combined market of 800 million people, as she stated them. She called the President “a tough negotiator and dealmaker” and said a successful outcome would be “the biggest deal each of us has ever struck.” The President noted the Japan deal had just been struck and that on most other countries “I’m just going to charge tariffs.” Asked to rate the chances of a deal, the exchange continued from his Friday estimate of 50 percent or less. The session closed with the President promising: “We’ll let you know what’s happening.”
Why it matters
This Turnberry session is the on-camera opening of the U.S.–EU trade negotiation — the fairness case stated by the President and the $1.7 trillion frame stated by the Commission President, in the room where the talks began.
