What happened

President Donald Trump took questions from the press before departing the White House for Scotland on July 25, 2025, carried on the White House channel. “We have great economic numbers,” he said. “The deal with Japan is amazing. Give us 550 billion and we have totally open access into Japan. Those numbers are great.”

Asked about the Justice Department’s lawsuit against New York City and Mayor Adams, the President said such filings would become routine: “we’re going against a lot of other places, too. We want to bring safety to our cities… we’ve started numerous lawsuits with other cities.” On Gaza negotiations, he said Hamas had pulled out: “Hamas didn’t really want to make a deal. I think they want to die and it’s very, very bad… it got to be to a point where you’re going to have to finish the job.” Asked about the Deputy Attorney General’s meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell, he said he did not know the details: “I know it’s taking place and he’s a fantastic man, he’s a great attorney.”

Why it matters

This departure gaggle set up the Scotland trip in the President’s own words — the Japan figures he would repeat all week, the sanctuary-city litigation posture, and his judgment that the Gaza talks had collapsed, all stated before he boarded.
