What happened
President Donald Trump visited the Federal Reserve’s construction site in Washington, D.C., on July 24, 2025, and took press questions on the tour, carried on the White House channel. “It feels very good, actually, to be back on the construction site,” he said, recalling the Old Post Office hotel project, before turning to rates: “very importantly, we have to get interest rates lowered in our country. Our country is the hottest in the world right now, but the one section — people are pretty much unable to buy housing — because the interest rates are too high. We have no inflation,” he said, as he stated it.
Senator Tim Scott appeared with the President during the visit. Asked whether he had a name in mind to replace the Chairman, the President said “Two people. Maybe three,” and joked he would pick Scott, “but I think he’s not leaving the Senate.” Asked whether Chairman Powell would resign, he answered no: “his term comes up soon. I think he’s going to do the right thing.” Asked whether he would consider firing the Chairman if rates did not fall, he said: “I don’t think we’re going to do that.”
Why it matters
A sitting president touring the central bank’s building project mid-fight over rates is a rare scene in the record: the pressure applied in person, and — in the same exchange — the President’s own on-camera statement that he did not expect to fire the Chairman.
Scoreboard watch
This visit is a scoreboard reference point: the President’s July 24, 2025 statements that Chairman Powell would not resign and that he did not think he would fire him, each as stated by the President, to be checked against the Federal Reserve succession record. The White House’s shorter tour upload of the same visit is recorded as an alternate of this page.
