What happened

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the press at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on July 10, 2025, during the ASEAN ministerial meetings, according to the State Department broadcast.

Rubio said he had met that day with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and echoed the President’s “disappointment and frustration at the lack of progress in peace talks” on Ukraine, calling the conversation frank and important and saying ideas shared there would be taken back to Washington. He also addressed the State Department reorganization, saying the Department had been prepared to implement it for months, that a district-court decision had slowed it, and that following the Supreme Court’s ruling the Department was prepared to act — describing the goal as a Department that is more efficient and more focused.
