Dr. Oz Warns Seniors About the Hospice Enrollment Scam

What happened

In a CMS public warning published July 8, 2025, Dr. Oz describes a scam in which people posing as salespeople target older Americans and trick them into signing up for hospice care without their knowledge. The scammers knock on doors offering free help — cooking, cleaning, protein shakes, or medical shipments — and need the senior to sign a paper. “Do not do it,” Oz says: health-care decisions belong between a patient and their doctor, not a salesperson. Signing, he warns, could put a senior’s future health-care rights at risk, because enrolling in hospice changes what Medicare covers.

Oz urges viewers to refuse by text, call, email, or door knock alike, never to give out their Medicare number, and to report suspected fraud to 1-800-MEDICARE or Medicare.gov/fraud.

Why it matters

Hospice enrollment fraud — beneficiaries signed up for end-of-life care they do not need and did not choose — is one of the specific schemes CMS has targeted under Oz, and this is the administrator delivering the consumer warning personally rather than through a press office. It is the beneficiary-facing half of the same fraud campaign as the “War on Fraud” enforcement material.
