What happened

President Donald Trump continued his guided walking tour of the new migrant detention facility in Ochopee, Florida, on July 1, 2025, carried on the White House channel as Part 2 of the tour. Governor Ron DeSantis described the pre-opening security work — the facility would be swept multiple times “to make sure there’s nothing that can be used for contraband or weapons before the detainees come in” — and Secretary Kristi Noem said arrivals could begin, in her words, “hopefully tomorrow, within the next 24 hours,” once the sweep was cleared.

Asked for a message to California Governor Gavin Newsom from inside the facility, the President said Newsom should “come here and learn something,” and argued a California version would cost far more; DeSantis added that California “has the original Alcatraz” and could seek approval to set up a similar facility. The President also repeated his account of what his administration inherited on immigration, saying the prior administration’s open-border policy allowed, as he stated the figure, 25 million people to enter unchecked.

Why it matters

Part 2 of the tour is the operational record of the facility’s opening: the sweep-then-receive sequence and the 24-hour arrival expectation stated by the Homeland Security Secretary on site, and the President’s direct pitch that other states copy the Florida model.

This tour is a scoreboard reference point: Secretary Noem’s July 1, 2025 statement that the facility could begin receiving detainees within 24 hours, as stated by the Secretary, to be checked against the facility’s actual first arrivals.
