What happened
President Donald Trump led a roundtable discussion at the opening of the Alligator Alcatraz detention facility in Ochopee, Florida, on July 1, 2025, carried in full on the White House channel. “It’s a great honor to be deep in Florida, the Florida Everglades, to open America’s newest migrant detention center,” he said. “Very soon, this facility will house some of the most menacing migrants, some of the most vicious people on the planet. We’re surrounded by miles of treacherous swamp land and the only way out is really deportation.”
The President said the project was built with FEMA money he said the prior administration had allocated to hotel rooms for migrants in New York City, at, as he put it, “a little fraction of that money.” He thanked Governor Ron DeSantis, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, among other state officials. He also cited the May border figures as released two days earlier: “The number of illegal aliens into the United States was zero. Zero,” as he stated the figure. Florida officials at the table described the site’s logistics — detainees already ordered deported could be driven, as one official put it, “2,000 feet to the runway and then they’re gone. It’s a one-stop shop” — and said the facility had been readied eight days after the call from DHS, as they described the timeline.
Why it matters
The roundtable is the formal opening record of Alligator Alcatraz: the funding rationale, the runway-deportation model, and the state-capacity argument — that other states replicating the model could, in Governor DeSantis’s words at the table, expand detention capacity by tens of thousands — all stated by the officials who built it.
Scoreboard candidate
Scoreboard candidate: the opening of Alligator Alcatraz on July 1, 2025, and the President’s statement that May 2025 saw zero illegal-alien entries as counted in the released figures — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
