What happened

President Donald Trump participated in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, on June 16, 2025, carried on the White House channel. Prime Minister Carney opened: “The G7 is nothing without U.S. leadership,” thanking the President and wishing him and the U.S. Army a happy 250th birthday. The President replied that the two had “developed a very good relationship” and that “our primary focus will be trade, and trade with Canada, and I’m sure we can work something out,” as he stated the aim.

On the shape of a deal, the President drew the contrast himself: “I have a tariff concept and Mark has a different concept. I’m a tariff person. I’ve always been a tariff person. It’s simple. It’s easy. It’s precise,” he said, calling a deal “achievable — both parties have to agree.” On Russia, he repeated his long-held position: “The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau didn’t want to have Russia in. And I would say that that was a mistake, because I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia in,” as he stated it. On Iran, he said Tehran “would like to talk, but they should have done that before,” as he stated the status.

Why it matters

This bilateral pairs the summit’s trade centerpiece — the Canada negotiation, with the President’s tariff-first concept stated against Carney’s in the host’s own room — with his G8 argument and his day-one Iran readout, all on the official record.
