What happened

President Donald Trump participated in a bill signing ceremony at the White House on June 12, 2025, carried in full on the White House channel, signing the resolutions disapproving California’s vehicle-emissions rules. “We officially rescue the U.S. auto industry from destruction by terminating California’s electric vehicle mandate once and for all,” he said. “People said it couldn’t be done. You got it done,” he added, noting he had considered an executive order instead: “The one good thing with this — number one, it holds up forever,” as he stated the advantage of the congressional route.

The President argued the California rules had forced automakers to build for two standards because, as he stated it, 17 states followed California’s rules. He thanked the Speaker of the House and members of Congress present, and ranged across his energy team and the wider record, including, as he stated the figure, $88 billion in tariffs taken in over two months with no inflation.

Why it matters

This signing is a first-class scoreboard event in the administration’s energy and regulatory record: a congressional-review repeal, signed into permanence in the President’s framing, of the California waiver structure that had set the de facto national EV timetable.
