What happened
President Donald Trump hosted the Presidential Commission to Make America Healthy Again at the White House on May 22, 2025, carried on the White House channel, four months after he created the commission. “Four months ago, I created the Presidential Commission to Make America Healthy Again, and today, the commission officially delivers its first report on childhood health,” he said. He was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — “the man who fought harder than anyone I know to bring these issues to the center of American politics,” as the President introduced him — and, as he named them from the stage, Secretaries Brooke Rollins, Scott Turner, Linda McMahon, Doug Collins, and Doug Burgum, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Budget Director Russ Vought, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz.
The President summarized the report’s findings as he presented them: “More than 40 percent of American children now have at least one chronic health condition. Since the 1970s, rates of childhood cancer have soared, in many cases, by nearly 50 percent,” he said, adding that childhood obesity had risen from under 5 percent in the 1960s to over 20 percent, and that autism had gone from “one in 10,000” a few decades ago to “one in 31” today, as he stated the figures. He said the report examines root causes “such as the ultra-processed foods, over-medicalization and over-prescription and widespread exposure to potentially toxic chemicals,” and pledged: “We will not stop until we defeat the chronic disease epidemic in America.”
Why it matters
This event is the MAHA program’s first deliverable, received by the President in person with most of his cabinet in the room: the childhood chronic-disease findings and the root-cause list — food, prescribing, and chemical exposure — that the commission’s follow-on work is charged to act on.
