What happened
President Donald Trump made an announcement with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office on May 20, 2025, carried on the White House channel, unveiling the Golden Dome missile defense shield. “In the campaign, I promised the American people that I would build a cutting-edge missile defense shield to protect our homeland from the threat of foreign missile attack. And that’s what we’re doing,” he said. “Today I’m pleased to announce that we have officially selected an architecture for this state-of-the-art system that will deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.”
The President said the system “should be fully operational before the end of my term,” that it would be capable of intercepting missiles “even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they’re launched from space,” including hypersonic, ballistic, and advanced cruise missiles, as he described the design, and that Canada had asked to take part. He put the funding and cost on the record: the One Big Beautiful Bill “will include $25 billion for the Golden Dome to help construction get underway,” and “we’re talking about $175 billion total cost of this when it’s completed,” as he stated the figures. He appointed Space Force General Michael Guetlein — the Vice Chief of Space Operations, as he introduced him — as the direct-reporting program manager for the effort. Secretary Hegseth followed: “Ultimately, this right here, the Golden Dome for America, is a game changer. It’s a generational investment in the security of America and Americans,” as he stated the department’s framing.
Why it matters
This Oval Office announcement is the Golden Dome’s founding record: the selected architecture, the operational-before-term-end commitment, the $25 billion down payment and ~$175 billion total as the President stated them, and the four-star program manager named to run it.
Scoreboard candidate
Scoreboard candidate: the May 20, 2025 Golden Dome announcement — architecture selected, $25 billion initial funding in the One Big Beautiful Bill, ~$175 billion total cost, and General Guetlein appointed program manager, all as stated by the President — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
