What happened

Secretary of State Marco Rubio testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs on Capitol Hill on May 20, 2025, on the fiscal 2026 Department of State budget request, according to the State Department broadcast, which carries the full hearing.

The afternoon session followed Rubio’s morning appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee the same day, opening a two-day, four-committee round of FY26 budget testimony.

Why it matters

Senate appropriators write the State Department’s spending bill; this hearing is the Senate money committee’s examination of the first Rubio budget request, paired with the same day’s authorizing-committee testimony.
