What happened
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt held a press briefing for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on May 20, 2025, carried on the White House channel, taking questions from the children of the journalists who cover the White House. “It is such a pleasure to see so many beautiful faces in this room, and so many future leaders,” she said. “Welcome to the James S. Brady Briefing Room. My name is Karoline Leavitt, and I am the White House Press Secretary for President Donald J. Trump.”
Leavitt opened with the President’s day as she stated it: he had traveled to Capitol Hill that morning to meet House members about the One Big Beautiful Bill, was back at the White House for meetings, and would make an Oval Office announcement with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that afternoon. The children’s questions, and her answers as she gave them, covered whether the President likes to give hugs (“I have seen him give many hugs to children and his family and our beautiful First Lady”), his favorite food (steak, as she said she had observed), the state of the border (“the most secure it has ever been in the history of our country,” as she assured the questioner), and how many people the President had fired (“we have not had anyone fired with the exception of one individual who did leave their job,” as she answered).
Why it matters
This special briefing is the Press Secretary’s own account of her job and the President’s day, given to the press corps’ children in the briefing room itself — a record of how the White House presents its work to the next generation of the people who cover it.
