What happened
President Donald Trump held a press conference at the White House with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on May 12, 2025, carried on the White House channel, to sign his most-favored-nation prescription drug pricing executive order.
The President opened with the weekend’s diplomacy — “my administration helped broker a full and immediate ceasefire, I think a permanent one, between India and Pakistan” — before turning to drug prices, the event’s subject. He contrasted American prices with prices abroad as he stated them: “One breast cancer drug costs Americans over $16,000 per bottle,” and “a common asthma drug costs almost $500 here in America but costs less than $40 in the United Kingdom.” Of the order’s approach, in the words of the signing clip the White House published from the event: “We’re gonna cut out the middlemen and facilitate the direct sale of drugs at the most favored nation price directly to the American citizen.” He put the national figure at “$1,126 per capita on drugs” spent in the United States, as he stated it.
