What happened
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted a Celebration of Military Mothers at the White House on May 8, 2025, carried on the White House channel, days ahead of Mother’s Day.
The President opened by noting the week’s news — “We just made a very big deal with the UK, United Kingdom, on trade” and word that Ukraine had approved the rare earth agreement, which he said “could be worth trillions of dollars” — before turning to the guests: “most importantly, to the military moms by far the most important,” he said, wishing them an early happy Mother’s Day. He thanked the First Lady for her work as a mother: “She is so good with Barron, but he’s grown up strong and nice. And he’s a good boy. He’s a good student. So I want to thank you. You’ve done a great job,” he said.
Why it matters
A ceremonial White House observance honoring military mothers, with the President and First Lady hosting together — and the President using the occasion to log the week’s UK trade deal and the Ukraine minerals agreement ratification as he stated them.
