What happened

President Donald Trump hosted the swearing-in of David Perdue as United States Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China in the Oval Office on May 7, 2025, carried on the White House channel, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio administering the oath of office.

Before the ceremony, the President announced he had signed a proclamation “officially designating tomorrow, May 8th, as a Victory Day for World War II, commemorating the 80th anniversary of America’s victory in the Second World War.” Introducing Perdue, he credited the former senator’s four decades in business — leading Reebok and Dollar General — and his Senate Foreign Relations Committee service: “Now I’m entrusting David to help manage one of America’s most complex and consequential foreign relationships,” he said, charging him to help stop Chinese fentanyl, seek “fairness and reciprocity for the American worker,” and promote stability in the Indo-Pacific. Perdue, sworn in, told the President: “I am glad to be your man in China.”

Why it matters

Perdue’s swearing-in puts the President’s chosen envoy in post for the administration’s most consequential bilateral relationship, with his marching orders stated on camera — and the same appearance carried the Victory Day proclamation the President signed for the 80th anniversary.
