What happened

President Donald Trump met Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada in the Oval Office on May 6, 2025, in a bilateral meeting carried on the White House channel, days after Carney’s election victory. “I think I was probably the greatest thing that happened to him, but I can’t take vote credit,” the President joked, congratulating Carney on what he called “probably one of the greatest comebacks in the history of politics.”

Mid-meeting, the President announced news on the Red Sea campaign: “The Houthis have announced that they are not — or they’ve announced to us at least that they don’t want to fight anymore. They just don’t want to fight. And we will honor that and we will stop the bombings,” he said. “They say they will not be blowing up ships anymore, and that’s what the purpose of what we were doing.” He said the two leaders would also discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, which both wanted ended.

Why it matters

Carney’s first White House visit set the tone for the U.S.-Canada relationship under the new prime minister — and the meeting doubled as the announcement vehicle for the Houthi ceasefire understanding, a dated foreign-policy commitment made on camera.

Scoreboard watch: the May 6, 2025 announcement that the Houthis had committed to stop attacking ships and that the United States would stop its bombings in response — flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
