What happened
President Donald Trump delivered a sports announcement at the White House on May 5, 2025, carried on the White House channel, with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Secretaries Scott Turner, Doug Burgum, and Howard Lutnick among those present. “I’m pleased to reveal that the 2027 NFL draft, that’s a big thing, will be held right here in our nation’s capital, Washington DC, on the National Mall,” the President said.
The President said the event would draw enormous crowds — the league’s expectation, as stated at the event, was more than one million people over three days — “boosting local businesses and bringing jobs and tourism to the heart of our capital.” He also praised the recently announced deal for a new 65,000-seat Washington Commanders stadium at the RFK Stadium site, calling it the best site in the world and tying both announcements to “making Washington DC safe and clean and beautiful.”
Why it matters
The draft announcement is the capital-city set piece of the President’s sports diplomacy: the NFL’s marquee offseason event placed on the National Mall, paired with the Commanders’ return-to-RFK stadium deal, both framed as part of the federal effort to restore Washington, D.C.
