What happened
President Donald Trump hosted the annual National Day of Prayer at the White House on May 1, 2025, in an event carried on the White House channel. “We’re bringing back religion in our country and we’re bringing it back quickly and strongly, because for America to be a great nation, we must always be one nation under God,” the President said, welcoming faith leaders to what he called a bigger White House observance: “This is the first time they’ve done it this way, and you deserve it.”
The President thanked Speaker Mike Johnson and described a morning meeting on the administration’s tax bill — “the great big beautiful bill” — warning, as he stated it, that taxes would rise sharply if it did not pass. He also previewed his evening trip to Tuscaloosa: “later today, I’ll be going to the University of Alabama to deliver the keynote commencement address to a record crowd.”
Why it matters
The National Day of Prayer observance is the White House’s flagship faith event of the spring, staged by the President as a centerpiece of his religious-liberty posture — and it bookends the same day’s Alabama commencement address in this chronicle.
