What happened

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt briefed members of the media on Apr. 29, 2025, carried on the White House channel, joined by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for the administration’s 100-day economic briefing. Leavitt opened by noting the House had passed the bipartisan Take It Down Act the night before - legislation championed by First Lady Melania Trump, as she described it, criminalizing publication of non-consensual intimate imagery - and said the President looked forward to signing it.

Leavitt repeated the 100-day economic figures as she stated them - 345,000 jobs added, 9,000 in manufacturing, wholesale egg prices down more than 50 percent from Inauguration Day under Secretary Rollins’s plan - before turning the briefing over to Bessent. Asked whether the White House’s ultimate tariff objective was long-term revenue or deals that reduce tariffs, Bessent answered: “I think it’s a combination of both,” as he stated the objective.

Why it matters

This is the Treasury Secretary’s own first statement of the tariff endgame at the 100-day mark - revenue and negotiated deals together - paired with the White House’s economic tally and the Take It Down Act’s passage through the House.

Scoreboard watch

Scoreboard watch: Secretary Bessent’s Apr. 29, 2025 statement that the tariff objective is a combination of revenue and deals, and the wholesale egg price decline of more than 50 percent as stated at the briefing - flagged for the scoreboard editors; the entry itself remains review-gated.
