What happened

President Donald Trump hosted Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store at the White House on Apr. 24, 2025, carried on the White House channel. The President opened on the war in Ukraine: “We want to end that war. We want to end it quickly. And I think we’ve made a lot of progress. And we’ll see what happens. This next few days is going to be very important. Meetings are taking place right now,” he said, repeating the figure he has used for the war’s toll - 2,500 people a week dying, mostly soldiers from Russia and Ukraine, as he stated it.

Prime Minister Store noted that 2025 marks 200 years since the first immigration from Norway to the United States, highlighted the allies’ security cooperation in the Arctic, and said: “I have saluted the President for his initiative to make progress towards something that can be a ceasefire and an end to this terrible conflict.” On trade, the President said the two countries understand each other very well: “I think we’ll have no problem whatsoever with Norway.”

Why it matters

The Norway meeting is a worked example of the administration’s allied-track diplomacy in the tariff era: a close ally publicly endorsing the Ukraine ceasefire push while the President promises, on camera, an uncomplicated trade outcome.
