What happened
President Donald Trump swore in Paul Atkins as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission at the White House on Apr. 23, 2025, carried on the White House channel, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent administering the oath of office. “No one in America is more highly qualified to lead the SEC in this exciting time than Paul,” the President said, reciting Atkins’s record as presented: Vanderbilt University School of Law, securities practice in New York, SEC staff in the 1990s, and SEC commissioner from 2002 to 2008.
The President highlighted Atkins’s work in the emerging crypto and blockchain industries, including as co-chair of the Digital Chamber’s Token Alliance, calling him the perfect man to lead the agency when crypto innovators need, as he put it, regulatory certainty and clear rules of the road. Taking questions afterwards, Atkins said he intended to work closely with the President’s CFTC nominee, Brian Quintenz: “I think there’s no reason why the two agencies can’t be working cheek to jowl on these issues for the American investor and the American economy.”
Why it matters
Atkins’s swearing-in installs the administration’s markets regulator with an explicit crypto brief - the clear-rules framework the President described - and his own stated plan for SEC-CFTC coordination from his first day in the chair.
