What happened

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the 2025 White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn on Apr. 21, 2025, carried on the White House channel. The President said 40,000 to 42,000 people were expected throughout the day, as he stated the attendance, and thanked the First Lady, who he said had organized the entire event.

Opening the festivities, the President announced news from that morning: “I just signed an executive order putting the flags of our country, all of them, all federal flags and state flags, at half-mast in honor of Pope Francis. So he was a good man, worked hard, he loved the world and it’s an honor to do that.” The broadcast continued with the President taking press questions on the lawn, including on military recruiting - “we have recruitments that’s at an all-time high,” as he stated it - and on the weekend’s reporting about Secretary Hegseth and Signal, which he dismissed.

Why it matters

The Easter Egg Roll broadcast carries the first presidential announcement of the half-staff order for Pope Francis - the opening act of the week’s Rome funeral diplomacy - delivered at the White House’s oldest public tradition.
