What happened

President Donald Trump welcomed the 2024 College Football National Champions, the Ohio State University Buckeyes, to the White House on Apr. 14, 2025, carried on the White House channel, with Vice President JD Vance joining the ceremony. The President noted that January 20th had been a big day for all of them - inauguration day and championship day alike.

The President congratulated Ohio State President Ted Carter and Athletic Director Ross Bjork, and read from the briefing on Coach Ryan Day: named head coach in December 2018, nine championship wins in six seasons, the only coach to lead his team to the College Football Playoff four times since 2019, and an overall record of 70-10, as the President recited it - adding, “I’d like to be your agent. I want to represent you.”

The President recounted the Buckeyes’ playoff run - Texas in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame in the national championship, back to back - saying no team had ever done it that way. Coach Day closed by quoting Theodore Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena,” displayed in the team’s room, and the captains presented gifts to the President and Vice President.

Why it matters

The Ohio State visit opened a championship week at the White House - the Buckeyes on Monday, the Navy Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy team on Tuesday - with the Vice President, an Ohioan, standing alongside the President for his home state’s champions.
