What happened
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz addressed the press in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11, 2025, after talks with the Ukrainian delegation, according to the State Department broadcast. Rubio announced that Ukraine had accepted the U.S. offer to enter into a ceasefire and immediate negotiations to end the war in a way he described as enduring and sustainable, thanked Saudi Arabia for hosting, and said the offer would now be taken to the Russians — the ball, he said, was in their court. Waltz said the Ukrainian delegation had accepted the full-ceasefire proposal and that the talks had moved into substantive detail on how the war would permanently end, including long-term security guarantees, as stated in their remarks.
Why it matters
Jeddah is the first concrete diplomatic product of the administration’s peace push: a ceasefire offer on paper, accepted by one belligerent, announced jointly by the Secretary of State and the National Security Advisor.
Scoreboard watch
